John Joseph Craine Memorial Darts Report

by isleofman.com 5th May 2015
Saturday May 2nd saw the inaugural John Joseph Craine memorial cup held at the Bar Logo. The rules for the comp had a twist as we went down the lines of 501 double of double finish which brought together both todays game and yester-years so thanks to that idea Ian Craine it certainly changed some of the matches.

Thanks to everyone who turned up meaning we had a quality field of 64 with all the best players the island has to offer in both the men and ladies.

Round one

Barry Sharpe played well in an all-Ramsey affair as he beat David Simpson 2-0 but the first of the stories of missed doubles. Alex Doddrell bets Rebecca White 2-0 with a 108 finish. Another all-Ramsey match-up as Steven Waters cruised past an off-form Darren Hadley. First of the family, and one to watch in the Ramsey league next year, Jason Craine beat Geoff Heather Watson 2 - 0. Grainne Craig saw herself into the last 32 as did Jan Ferguson with a good win over Laura Howard. Jamie Kelly beat the self fancied Paul Routledge 2 - 0 to book his slot. Mick McGhee took out Ramsey secretary David Lee 2 - 1. Robert Nelson beat the junior winner Max Arthur 2 - 0 but not before the young man gives him a scare as Max got off first and was down to 46 before Robbie nicked the leg and 12 darter in the second leg proved the class he is but Max still got off. Margaret Kelly the Island's number one and certainly one no one wanted to draw but Geoff Howland did and did the job but not before Margaret showed her class only missing the bull for a massive 164 finish. Another tale of missed doubles as Nicola Libreri lost out to Liam Og Murphy 2 - 1. Mike Jelski lost out to Colin Tyrer which included a white wash. Next of the family and John Craine showed he can throw a mean dart as he defeated Nigel Andrew Williams 2 - 1. Dave Nicol has a tough draw against one of Ramsey's rising stars Jamie J Skillan but it was Dave who won it 2 - 1. Robbie Cannell booked his place as he beats Richard Beech 2 - 0. Charlie Cover beats Brenda Smith 2 - 0. Jason Smith was the first to take out one of the family as he beat Mike Craine 2 - 0. Paul 'Aggie' Arthur beat Steve White 2 - 0 including a white wash. Tony Kermeen rolled back the years as he beat Andy Evans 2 - 0. Dave Madden won 2 - 0 against Wayne Patton. Chris Clague won a tight one against Clare Kelly 2 - 1. Jimmy "it never leaves you" Allison won 2 - 0 against Alana Ferguson . Helped by a fine 108 finish Ian M Fields beat Conall Hughes 2 - 0. Paul Allison took down Juan Kinrade 2 - 0 with a nice 86 finish. Ray Kelly made his way to round two by defeating Carol White 2-0. Dave Faragher was beaten by Glenn Moorley 2 - 0. Paul Kelly cruised through Carl Wilson 2 - 0. Gazza Uren played well against Simon Griffin and won through 2 - 1. Rob Collister showed some of his practice form as he beat Cat Tracy 2 - 0. Andrew Hudgeon took out the organiser of the cup Ian Craine 2 -0.

Last 32

Robbie Nelson playedteammate Stevie Waters and won it 3 - 0. Battle of the mates as Jason Craine came up against the on form Barry Sharpe and Razzor won it 3 - 0. Jamie Kelly putspay to Grainne's run as he won 3 - 0. Alex Doddrell lost out to surprise package Mick McGhee 3 - 1. Geoff Howland had yet another tough match but beat Steve Moran 3 - 0. Colin Tyrer has a good game against Dave Maddan and a 120 finish sealsedit. John Craine was at it again this time it was Liam Murphy who was his victim 3 - 2 the score. Paul Arthur won a tight game against Dave Nicol 3 - 1. Game of the oldies as Robbie Cannell played Charlie Cover. It was Cover through 3 - 2. Another match and another win for Tony Kermeen, Jason Smith lost this one 3 - 1. Young Chris Clague got a lesson from one of the oldies as Jimmy Allison won this one 3 - 2. Jimmy's son Paul was on next against Ian Fields but lost this one 3 - 0. Glenn Moorley took out Gazza Uren 3 - 1. Paul Chap Kelly took out Malcolm Callow 3 - 1. Ray Kelly must like the boards in The Logo as he won yet another game , this time he took down Rob Collister 3 - 1. Andy Hudgeon defeated Jan Ferguson 3-0 to book his last 16 place.

Last 16

Barry Sharpe won a thriller as Mick McGhee missed match darts before Razzor nicked it 3 - 2. Robbie Nelson won the battle of the big scores as he beat Jamie Kelly 3 - 0. Aggie had a chance to beat a surprisingly misfiring Colin Tyrer but as usual he didn't take his chances and it was Colin who won it 3 - 1. It was the end of John Craines run as Geoff Howland demolished him 3 - 0. Tony Kermeen did it again. This time it was Charlie Cover who was beaten 3 - 0. Another good run finished as Jimmy lost out to his son's victor Ian Fields 3 - 0. Glenn Moorley likes playing Ramsey players as he took down his third in as many rounds, Andy Hudgeon this time round 3 - 0. Chap Kelly makes his way into the last 8 also.

Quarter finals

Tony Kermeen 0 - 4 Ian Fields : game too far for Tony as Ian showed his class.
Barry Sharpe 2 - 4 Robbie Nelson : close game up until the last as Sharpie brings it back to 3-2 but then can't get off.
Paul Kelly 4 - 2 Glenn Moorley : chap shows his class as well as some missed doubles from Glenn.
Geoff Howland 4 - 3 Colin Tyrer : match of the day and one of the best I have witnessed as it was unbelievable darts right through. In one leg Geoff goes off with 160 away followed by a ton. Colin follows this with 140,140,180 but Geoff won the leg fantastic. Match goes to 3 - 3 and with Colin struggling to get off Geoff is sat on a double waiting. Colin steps up with 135 left. First dart 2 , second dart treble 20 and third dart he wires the bull. Geoff stepped up and takes out the winning double.

Semi final

Ian Fields 5 - 3 Paul Kelly
Bar logo team mates but not tonight as they went to war , trading blows right through but Ian hit the vital doubles to edge it.
Robbie Nelson 5 - 1 Geoff Howland
Robbie showed the class as I think it's a case of Robbie stepping it up and Geoff just has nothing left in the tank after his epic Quarter with Colin.

FINAL

Robbie Nelson 6 - 3 Ian Fields
The match was close up to when Robbie won leg 5 then it was a case of too much of a mountain for Ian and Robbie took the title and the extremely impressive trophy plus prize money.

I would personally like to thank Ian and the whole Craine family for trusting me to run the comp for them. Thanks to Mike Jelski as it's not me that runs these great comps it's us that does that. David Lee, Liam Murphy, Glenn Charnock and Nicola Libreri for their help with the posters and spreading the word. Steve White and the entire Bar Logo crew for the sponsorship , making us all feel so welcome and the venue. Mac MacDonald who did the score calling in the semi's and finals. Here's to next year and hopefully the players can spread the word of how good this comp was so we can get bigger.
