The Bar Logo and Ablec Electrical & Gas Services Limited sponsored Powell Brown Open attracted a large field for a sunny day’s competitive golf at Ramsey on Sunday.
With the course playing long no one managed to take a great lead so it was yet again a tight finish. With the closing holes being crucial just 3 shots covered to top dozen players. Connal Hughes had a great lap with 38 points, playing a competitive 3 ball with Jon Cowley and his brother Ciarran Hughes. Connal got the measure of the day after a great birdie start and another on the long par 4, 15th. Also on 38 were the in-form Colin Taylor, fresh from having a mid-week hole in one on the 18th. Jason Craine, Glen Charnock and Toto Mazzone also posted 38 points but did not make the prizes. Ray Rowley’s 39 points looked impressive but a double bogey 6 on the 10th followed by a finish of 4 successive bogies was disappointing for Ray. He was out done by Stan Ryzak who started with a birdie on the 4th and another on the 15th after watching Dave Kinrade shoot an eagle 2 on this stroke index 1 hole. Stan Ryzak was so elated but lost concentration on the closing holes with double bogies on 16 and 17 and capping it all with another dropped shot on the 18th. 39 points for Stan, still the happy man! That frustrating back 9 was a feature for the remaining contenders, a good back 9 finish is the key to winning at Ramsey. Ray Jopson managed 39 points with a birdie on the 2nd and a nice par finish but a few double bogies on the back 9 spoiled his chances of taking a podium spot. Also on 39 points but with dropped shots on the last two holes was Ian Craine. Birdies on the 8th and 15th undid some steady play but Ian’s day will not be far off this season. The top three spots all shared 40 points and the back 9 scores were what it was all about. Steve Kelly started well apart from a 7 on the 7th but he had the shots in the bag but the 7 made another appearance on the 15th. Just a par on the 18th would have given Steve the win but the double bogey malaise struck again and a back 9 of 18 points gave him 3rd spot. It was left to Dave Boswell and Captain Phil Hassall, both in-form players, to scrap it out for first prize. Dave had a disastrous start, failing to score on the first hole, he didn’t really improve enough over the front 9 dropping a further 3 shots. Phil Hassall took the advantage with a birdie 2 on the 3rd and another birdie on the tricky 10th. Phil led at the turn and had it in his grasp to win over the closing holes. Dave Boswell steadied his ship and despite dropping a shot on the 13th and 16th played to par when it mattered. Phil’s game fell apart and he couldn’t buy a par on the closing holes. Two pars on the last 4 holes would have given him a win but he just couldn’t hole out. Dave’s steady finish was enough to give him a deserved win, courtesy of a better back 9.
With a Bank holiday next weekend its Andrew Dyson’s Professional Day competition on Saturday and the Club will host the Okell’s Tankards Open AM AM on Monday.
