Paving the promenade?

by isleofman.com 28th April 2015

The government has released a video explaining how paved areas for both pedestrians and motorists can work better than traditional roads - ahead of unveiling radical new plans for Douglas promenade.

A more integrated design can improve traffic flow and safety, according to a leading UK urban design specialist.

It could result in a scheme for the promenade that is similar to North Quay, which has been transformed by paving the street for use by both pedestrians and cars.

In the video commentary, Ben Hamilton-Baillie says: 'The problem many towns suffer is that in trying to accommodate traffic they’ve allowed streets to become so heavily dominated by vehicles those streets have lost their primary purpose as places that attract people, investment and spending.'

Plans for the refurbishment of Douglas promenade will be revealed next week by the Department of Infrastructure, which says it has been working a 'bold and innovative' scheme.
