Bobby Moore Fund charity golf day: Fifth year of Celton Manx sponsorship

by isleofman.com 27th April 2015

Celton Manx is to sponsor the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK charity golf day for the fifth consecutive year.

The event is to be held on Thursday June 18th at the Mount Murray golf club and will not only offer a great day’s golf but also golf tricks and comedy from ‘The Striker’ Paul Barrington. (Think 7ft-long clubs and putters used as drivers).

The day is already attracting teams from the Island’s business community who, this year, will be joined by former professional footballers turned commentators Tony Gale and Tony Cottee.

A prize presentation and dinner at the Mount Murray clubhouse will complete the day which could see one player win a Honda CRV supplied by Kingswood Honda should they achieve a hole in one.

First held in 2011 the golf day has so far raised more than ?85,000 for the fund, which is dedicated to bowel cancer research and was founded in 1993 in partnership with Cancer Research UK by Stephanie Moore MBE in memory of her husband, West Ham United player Bobby Moore OBE, who died of the disease in February 1993, aged 51.

Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said: ‘As operator of the global sportsbook SBOBET, Celton Manx enjoyed a long standing sponsorship association with West Ham United Football Club from 2009 to 2013. We are delighted that this gave us the opportunity to meet with and support the invaluable work that Stephanie has embarked upon in memory of Bobby and the truly amazing progress that their research has, and continues to deliver.

‘This is an occasion which has become a high point in the Island’s golfing calendar thanks, in no small part, to the organising team headed by Lars Ugland, the support of the local business community and the commitment of Stephanie Moore to raising awareness of bowel cancer, a disease that can be treatable if detected early enough.’

Stephanie Moore said: ‘I am delighted that once again Celton Manx will very generously be sponsoring the Bobby Moore Fund charity golf day in the Isle of Man. Last year the teams played in glorious sunshine and the dinner following was a really fun and entertaining event. Once again all the monies raised from the golf day, thanks to Celton Manx plus Lars Ugland and his brilliant team organising the tournament, will be spent on our dedicated bowel cancer research programme run by Cancer Research UK. Bowel cancer, the second highest killing cancer in the UK, claims 44 lives every day and research is essential if we are ever to change these dreadful statistics. Please visit www.bobbymoorefund.org to learn more about what we do.’
