One of the Island’s most experienced road racers hit a wall at high speed, sustaining multiple injuries, a court has been told.

The inquest of Gary Carswell opened at Douglas Courthouse this morning.

The TT podium finisher and former Senior Manx Grand Prix winner died in Noble’s Hospital following the incident during a practice session at Jurby six days ago.

Mr Carswell, a civil engineer from Ramsey, was 46.

Today Coroner of Inquests John Needham offered his condolences to the family and adjourned the hearing to a date to be fixed while investigations continue.
