It was time for the Ladies and Gents from Ramsey to play a Tuesday mixed AM AM in aid of Manx Blind Welfare.
This charity receives no government funding but still provides significant and helpful support to blind people on the Island. It is fondly supported by Ramsey members and David Wilson from the Charity was on board to receive a cheque from Rosemarie Sinclair for just over ?600 raised from the day’s competition. With a mixed Stableford format the competition was fierce and the end result close.
Conditions were good for the day and the scheduled rain never appeared. Michael Choo, Heidi Morris, Martin Webb, Joy Morris and Colin Taylor all had competitive teams out on the course and were in-form looking for a win. Michael Choo’s birdies on the 6th and 8th gave them 38 points at the turn and certainly they looked to be contention but a subdued back 9 of 33 points and overall 71 was disappointing to say the least. Suffering a similar fate were Diane Mullan’s team with an opening 38 showing promise but 35 on the back 9 didn’t get near the leader board. Linda Webb’s team including Steve Moorehouse and very very late recruit, Bob Baggaley, went out in par and posted 39 on the back 9 for 75 points but still out of the prizes. Ruth Murdoch teamed up with Jean Pattison and Roger Butler and played some steady golf after a disastrous single point on the first, picking up points on the 9th and throughout the back 9. Their 76 was commendable but would it be enough? Joy Morris, teaming up with John Rotheroe and John Huyton were motoring along steadily enough until disaster struck on the 16th when they mustered just 2 points in a back 9 of 41 and 79 point total giving them third place. The top two places were fought out by Martin Webb with Nora Pugh and Anne Callister against Pauline Beattie, Colin Taylor and fresh from a successful Aintree weekend, Stella Jelski. Martin Webb dropped just two shots in an impressive front 9 and the team posted 40 points. Colin Taylor found the 7th tricky and was helped out by Stella and Pauline especially on the 9th. Their 38 point front 9 total meant Martin Webb’s team were firmly in front. Martin continued a great round dropping two more shots and an 82 point team total looked unassailable. Colin Taylor’s team started the back 9 quite unsteadily. Pauline and Stella provided the point scoring 11th through to the 14th and with Colin providing a rock steady par performance on the closing holes resulting in a back 9 of 44 and equalling the 82 total set by Martin Webb’s team. The better back 9 was enough to give Colin, Stella and Pauline the first prize.
Many thanks to Rosemarie Sinclair and Jan Sentence for organising the event.
