Pupils get moving to help buy their own minibus

by isleofman.com 14th April 2015

Kewaigue Primary School pupils are taking to various modes of transport as they raise money to buy their own minibus.

The school is staging a sponsored novelty transport event on Tuesday 21st April. Children, parents and staff will choose from trikes, scooters, space hoppers and go-karts to complete as many laps of the NSC athletics raceway as possible in a set time limit.

The event marks the launch of an appeal to raise money for a minibus for the 135-pupil school.

Adrian Shorthouse, Headteacher, said ‘During a consultation exercise to create a vision for the school, staff, governors and parents expressed a desire to give pupils greater opportunities to develop an interest and awareness of their community, and play a more active role in it.

‘Transportation poses the main barrier to children accessing such educational opportunities,’ said the Headteacher.

‘We are keen to get out and about to more businesses and support our community, but are held back because of the availability and cost associated with transportation. A minibus will provide pupils and staff safe, readily available transport to enrich our curriculum.’

The school’s Friends’ Association has a fund raising target of ?25,000.

Janet Clarkson, chair of the Friends’ Association, said ‘This is an ambitious project but parents at Kewaigue want children to not only have an interest and awareness of what happens in their local community, but also make a difference to it.’

As part of the schedule of events planned as part of the fundraising effort, the school will be hosting a Summer Fayre on Sunday 28th June between 12pm and 5pm. This will feature giant inflatables, a bucking bronco, entertainment, BBQ and much, much more!

The general public can donate to the school minibus appeal by contacting the school office on 673951.
