Unattended Frying Pan Causes Douglas Fire

by isleofman.com 9th April 2015

At approximately 02.04hrs on the 9th April the Emergency Services Joint Control Room received a 999 call from a caller reporting flames being seen from a second floor window of a property in Christian Road, Douglas. Three fire appliances from Douglas, one fire appliance from Laxey, an Ariel Ladder Platform, Duty and Brigade Officers were mobilised.

Upon arrival it was quickly ascertained by the Officer in Charge that not everyone had evacuated the building and been accounted for. Crews wearing Breathing Apparatus and taking appropriate firefighting media with them forced entry into the second floor flat. Two persons were rescued from the property and taken to safety where they were then administered oxygen therapy by Ambulance and fire personnel. A third occupant of the building from an adjacent flat was also escorted to safety and given medical treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation. All three were later transferred to Nobles Hospital by Ambulance for further tests.

The fire was extinguished, a positive pressure fan was utilised to remove the products of combustion and the premises made safe. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen although the rest of the flat had been heavily smoke logged. The cause of the fire was found to be a frying pan being left unattended on the hob.

Crews remained in attendance for approximately 90 minutes to ensure that the property had been ventilated.

Safety Message

• Stand by your pan – take pans off the heat and turn off the hob and/or grill if you have to leave the kitchen when cooking
• Keep your cooker and grill pan clean – burnt food and fat causes fire
• Maintain electrical kitchen appliances and keep away from water
