Polo: The next big thing in corporate entertainment

by isleofman.com 7th April 2015

For centuries polo has been synonymous with princes and presidents, and in the modern era is played by billionaires and royalty with international tournaments attracting blue chip brands as sponsors. While still maintaining its status as a prestige sporting and social occasion, polo is also becoming much more accessible. It’s the ‘next big thing’ when it comes to businesses looking for corporate entertainment and branding opportunities, or for ‘team building’ events – especially here in the Isle of Man.
Recently, the Island hosted its first fully competitive polo matches with a team from the Triskelion Polo Club taking on a British Army Reserves team. The Club, which is based at Grenaby Mooar, Malew, was set up towards the end of last year and has already taught many complete novices how to play the game. The Club is run by General Manager Frazer Houston and his brother Cameron who are both experienced polo players and all-round horsemen. Frazer, a former National Hunt jockey who rode winners for leading trainers including Sue and Harvey Smith, commented:

“Polo is a competitive but very sociable and friendly sport with matches being an important social occasion as well as a sporting event. It’s also much more accessible than most people think – we have already taught many complete novices at our polo school, most of whom do not own their own ponies. As the popularity of the sport grows we’re receiving more and more calls from individuals who just phone up to arrange a one-off lesson to try polo for the first time – but most want to come back for more lessons because they enjoy it so much. Polo is open to all ages to take part and ideal for corporate teams, either to increase brand recognition, for client entertainment, or for staff team-building. ”

The Club also organise ‘Learn To Play’ events for all ages, including special sessions for schools, and there are also special corporate events. All lessons are run by expert coaches who teach people to ride the Club’s impressive stable of polo ponies, although anyone who owns their own pony is also welcome. All riding and polo equipment is provided for those who need it.

The excellent facilities and coaching provided by Frazer, Cameron and their colleagues at Grenaby Mooar means that there’s never been a better time to take it up as a sport or get involved as a sponsor.

A range of exclusive sponsorship opportunities are available via leading marketing and communications agency MM&C. Managing Director Craig Wolstencroft commented:

“The packages include a wide range of excellent branding and corporate entertainment opportunities, including pitchside advertising, access to a VIP marquee on match days for sponsors and guests, and exclusive ‘polo experience’ days to learn how to play the game.”
