Call for cull of councillors in capital

by isleofman.com 6th April 2015

Douglas Borough Council is the latest local authority in the Island poised to cut the number of its elected members.
With moves already underway in Peel and Castletown to slim down the number of local politicians, council members are set to consider the issue in the capital on Wednesday.
Catherine Corlett, who represents St George’s, will propose slashing the number of councillors from 18 down to just 12.
But even if the council gives the go-ahead, it’ll be some time yet until any such moves are made.
Under Councillor Corlett’s motion, the borough’s ward boundaries would also be redrawn as the local authority cuts six members.
If the motion is seconded and approved, the council's Executive Committee would look into the idea and report back in July.
But even if the committee gives its backing to the revamp, proposals would have to go to the Department of Infrastructure – there’d then be a review and inquiry before Tynwald votes on the plans.
However, if Councillor Corlett receives the backing she needs, the changes could be made by the time the public goes to the polls in local authority elections in April 2016.
