Measures to control the use of towed caravans in the Island have moved a step closer.
A new permit system is being introduced as part of a partnership between infrastructure chiefs, the Steam Packet and freight operators.
It means towed caravans arriving at the Island’s main ports will need a valid permit.
Those without a permit will be banned from entry at both the Sea Terminal and Ramsey harbour in a new system enforced by the department’s port security officers.
The department’s also considering restricting the roads on which towed caravans can travel - discussing appropriate routes from ports to designated campsites around the Island.
Minister Phil Gawne says while not encouraging towed caravans onto Manx roads amid concerns about traffic congestion and road safety, there’s an acknowledgement they want to support the tourism industry, particularly caravan owners coming across for the Island’s showpiece motorcycling festivals.
Permits will not be issued to those wishing to bring new or replacement caravans to the Island.Clip 1
