LibVan names by-election candidates

by isleofman.com 27th March 2015

The LibVan party has named the two candidates who’ll contest by-elections in Douglas caused by Legislative Council elections.

Last night, the party held an extraordinary general meeting in Douglas, where member were asked to approve candidates for North and South Douglas.

Both seats are currently empty after their serving MHKs were elected to become MLCs.

In Douglas North, Maire Booth will fight for the seat left vacant after Bill Henderson was elevated to the upper chamber, while in South Douglas Keith Fitton will contest David Cretney’s former Keys seat.

Mrs Booth – a political science graduate from Belfast – is the LibVan spokeswoman for social care, and the party says she’s been instrumental in formulating policy for the 2016 general election.

She’ll face Douglas councillor David Ashford and island businessman Ralph Peake.

Mr Fitton, meanwhile, works for a charity and is a registered mental nurse – he’ll face Douglas Councillor Bill Malarkey at the polls.

Party chairman Roy Redmayne says both made valuable manifesto and would serve constituents well.
