Last week’s Annual Quiz Night was a big success and great fun. Last year’s winners Phil, Anne & Eleanor Bannan and Norman and Linda Faragher set some intriguing questions on so many different subjects that every team had a chance to do well on certain subjects. Eventually the winning team was the Walking Talking team of Club Chairman, Stuart Colligon, wife Donna, James Davis, Belinda and Elsdon Watson. In 2nd place Pete’s Plonkas – peter & Chris Barradell, Heather & John Beckett, Jill Hamilton-Turner and Catherine Travers and 3rd Wimbledon Wizards – David Kennaugh, Jim Donnelly, David Bufton, Emma Raybon, Bryan and Pat Sharp. The raffle had lots of prizes and raised ?172 and profit on tickets after supper costs was ?150. So a good night all round. Thanks to Kirsten Hall, Jackie Russell, Jan Gaskill and helpers for organising the event.
Six Albany juniors represented the Isle of Man in the LTA Boys 18 & under County Cup in Glasgow last week. This was a very young team – Sean Drewry (16), Adam Pyatt-Coppell (15) Sasha Thomas (15), Jay Skelcher Maxwell (13 ), Max Walker (14 ) and Will Broadhead (16). Will is also a member of Ramset TC. They found this a very tough assignment as the other teams all had 17/18 yr olds so power was the key. Though they were well beaten with Sean winning the only rubber, team manager, Ian Watson, was impressed with their efforts and says they will be stronger next year for the experience.
Last weekend the club staged another in it’s planned series of Mini Tennis Match Play events. Spectators witnessed some excellent tennis skills. The Red Ball main draw had 16 players and a beginners draw for players new to competition. There were some really close matches as the results show. Red Ball One r/r - Group A – 1st Ben Bosworth, 2nd Lucas Mikan; Group B – 1st Sarah Long, 2nd Ben Leinwand; Group C – 1st Greg Kelly, 2nd Lucas Harding; Group D – 1st Henry Telford, 2nd Charlie Brkic. Qtr.finals – Ben Bosworth bt Lucas Harding 10-6, Henry Telford bt Ben Leinwand 10-8, Greg Kelly bt Lucas Mikan 10-6, Charlie Brkic bt Sarah Long 10-6; s/finals Ben bt Henry 10-8, Charlie bt Greg 10-7. Final Ben bt Charlie 10-6. In the beginners group William Shooter was the winner, r/up Cameron Roome, 3rd Jared Shepard, 4th Ed Coole. The Green Ball r/r 1st Jayden Go, 2nd Charlotte Clarke, 3rd Aalish Kelly, 4th Mika Chen. There will be further rounds in the series later during the season.
