Tynwald has hosted a presentation by Epilepsy Action, Europe’s largest epilepsy member organisation, at the invitation of Hon Juan Watterson MHK.
Tynwald Members heard Epilepsy Action North of England regional services manager Cliff Challenger explain the work of the organisation, which is now establishing a presence in the Isle of Man, training volunteers to deliver awareness talks.
Mr Challenger said: ‘I was delighted to have been invited to speak by the Minister for the Department of Home Affairs; raising epilepsy awareness in the emergency services can be of particular benefit to those who might have to deal with the condition.
‘I was very impressed by the reception I received and it was clear people were keen to engage with the subject. The message I wanted to convey was that epilepsy is a common neurological condition. I explained that Epilepsy Action is working to help people with epilepsy manage their condition; that they are not alone. Our aim is to ensure that all people with epilepsy receive specialist health care and treatment for their condition and that they can lead their lives free from stigma, prejudice and discrimination.
‘My visit to Tynwald was very fruitful and I am looking forward to returning to the Isle of Man in May when there is to be an epilepsy awareness day hosted by Noble’s Hospital.’
Mr Watterson said: ‘I was happy to host this meeting in the Barrool Suite to educate Members on the issues surrounding epilepsy. It was great to help in getting the Manx group off the ground and introduce them to key players in the community who can assist them with their work. I think it is fair to say that we all learned a lot from the presentation: from the prevalence of epilepsy to the variety of types of epilepsy, as well as some key dos and don’ts.’
