It will cost more to visit the dentist from April 1 if a 10-12 per cent increase in charges gets Tynwald's approval.
Health Minister Howard Quayle said: 'The increase in charges is the first for almost five years and is actually slightly below the rise in inflation over that period.'
He said the charges would be brought in line with those in England, adding: 'Examinations take up the time of a qualified dentist and dental nurse, so it is appropriate that they attract a charge. However, charges for NHS examinations generally remain substantially
lower than the charge for examinations in the private sector.'
If the new fees are approved, it will cost ?18.50 for a consultation, ?50.00 for treatment and ?219.00 for the provision of appliances. Mr Quayle said there would be incremental increases to maintain the link with prices in England.
Children under 16 and those on income support or Job Seeker's Allowance will still qualify for free examinations and treatment.
