The guided tours of The Gaiety Theatre have developed over the years encompassing Manx social history and the history of Manx entertainment over the last 120+ years. They also look at the history of the site of the Gaiety, how it has developed and the actual survival and restoration of the Gaiety as we know it today.
The tour guides, Derek Hibbert and Mike Lean, take people back in time as they wind their way through the building starting with all the beauty and adornments of the front of house and ornate auditorium, to the more practical back stage. The tour also includes a trip under the stage into the amazing ‘trap house’, one of the Gaiety’s best kept secrets, which displays the famous Corsican Trap, the only one of its kind in the world! There will also be a chance to see the costume display and historical lighting museum, including original early electrical stage lighting and original projection equipment.
The tours are on Saturdays at 10:00am starting on Easter Saturday, the 4th of April and running to the end of September. Occasionally a tour will not run due to commitments to theatre set up and rehearsal.
Pre-booking is advised as places are limited. Special interest groups and private tours can be catered for by contacting the Gaiety directly. All public tours can be booked via the Gaiety’s main booking service on +44 (0)1624 694555 or in person at the Villa Marina reception or the Welcome Centre. Tours take approximately 2? hours and sadly, due to the historic structure of the building, there are features of the tour which are not disabled-friendly.
Each tour costs ?7.50 for adults, ?3.50 for children and ?15:00 for family of 3.
