Event to mark Island's loss in plane tragedy

by isleofman.com 27th February 2015
A ceremony has been held in St John's to remember the 35 Manx residents who lost their lives in the Winter Hill plane crash more than half a century ago.
Today is the 57th anniversary of the tragedy, and in keeping with tradition, the Rotary Club of Douglas has organised a service of remembrance at Cooil y Ree park in St John's.
The ill fated flight departed Ronaldsway on this day in 1958.
It was carrying a party of local motor traders on a day trip to the Exide battery factory in Manchester.
Only seven survived when the aircraft crashed in bad weather less than an hour later near Horwich in Lancashire.
Today's service takes place at the site in St John's where a memorial plaque was installed on the 50th anniversary of the crash in 2008.
As well as remembering those who lost their lives, the event pays tribute to the residents of Horwich who helped rescue survivors and comforted relatives.
Members of Douglas Rotary club travel to Winter Hill each year to lay a wreath, with fellow Rotarians from Horwich. Clip 1
