Get on your bike for Coast To Coast Challenge!

by isleofman.com 27th February 2015

If you want a great summer cycling holiday through the Lake District, or just want an incentive to get fit, then The Children’s Centre has the perfect event for you. The Coast To Coast Cycle Challenge is a three-day ride through some spectacular countryside from Whitehaven on the Irish Sea coast to Tynemouth on the North Sea coast. It is one of Britain’s most iconic cycle routes and the ride is ideal for all abilities.

The Children’s Centre’s experienced team will provide support throughout the 138-mile cycle which takes place from July 24 to 27. The coast to coast event follows the route designed by Sustrans which opened in 1994, and which is now Britain’s most popular long-distance cycling route. After setting off from Whitehaven, the riders will head through the Lake District, across the Pennines and on towards Tynemouth. The route takes in lakes and pine forests, mountain passes and moorland, and is broken down into daily mileages which are manageable for most riders. Day one will be a ride of around 30 miles to Keswick; day two around 56 miles finishing in Allenheads; and the last day 51 miles to the North Sea coast.

Lisa Motley, Endurance Events Fundraiser at The Children’s Centre, said:

“This is a fully supported tour which is ideal for novice and recreational cyclists, or for more experienced riders. It can be completed on road or mountain bikes, so it’s ideal for anyone wanting to get fit for the Manx Telecom End2End Mountain Bike Challenge in September. The Coast To Coast entry fee includes transport by ferry and minibus, accommodation and breakfast for three nights, mechanical support throughout the tour, and energy drinks. All you have to do is ride your bike, soak up the scenery along the way, and enjoy the camaraderie and team spirit which is always a feature of this type of event.”

The Challenge costs ?185 per person, and each participant then has to raise a minimum of ?350 in sponsorship. All funds raised go towards The Children’s Centre’s charitable projects Mobex, Out2Play, Child Contact Centre, Thriving Families, EPICentre, Community Development and the Community Farm which all help families and children across the Island.
