Event highlights support available for those with eating disorders

by isleofman.com 17th February 2015
There’ll be a free information evening on the 25th February to mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2015.

The event, which will be held at the iMuseum in Douglas from 6:30pm to 8:00pm is being organised by the Department of Health and Social Care’s Mental Health Service and local charity Manx Eating Disorders Support Group.  Representatives will be on hand to provide information and advice to anyone affected by an eating disorder, whether personally or in support of a friend or family member.

The evening will provide a relaxed, informal and friendly environment to hear from Community Mental Health Professional Nicola Howard, who specialises in supporting people with eating disorders, and to meet volunteers from the Island’s support group.

Minister for Health and Social Care, Howard Quayle MHK, said:

“A great deal of work is being done to look at how we can enhance services to support good mental health and wellbeing as part of Government’s commitment to protect vulnerable individuals.  Public information events such as this offer a proactive and effective way of raising awareness whilst providing access to practical information, advice and support.

“The Department is grateful to be able to partner with the Manx Eating Disorders Support Group for this event and to draw on the awareness week organised by UK charity Beat.

Nicola Howard said:

“Up to 6.4% of adults display signs of an eating disorder at some point in their lives.  In the last five years the Mental Health Service has treated and supported over 500 adults experiencing an eating disorder, including anorexia, bulimia and other types such as binge eating disorder.  It can be very difficult for people with eating disorders to get better on their own.  It is important to be supported and guided in seeking professional help and treatment as soon as possible.2

“Anyone with a concern, no matter how small, can come to the event to find out more information and seek advice is confidence.  Alternatively they can make an appointment to speak to their GP.”

Georgie Shelley from the Manx Eating Disorders Support Group said:

"Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a chance to raise awareness and understanding of eating disorders, challenge stereotypes and stigmas. Eating disorders are not just about food, they can be a way of coping with emotional distress. The sooner someone gets help, the greater the chance of them making a successful recovery."
