Unemployment at 2.2 per cent

Twenty per cent of registered unemployed people have been jobless for more than a year, according to figures released today by the government.


Overall, 973 people were out of work at the end of January, the lowest January unemployment figure for four years but an increase of 91 on the previous month.


Nearly half of all unemployed have been on the register for three months or less but 10 per cent have been jobless for more than a year and a further 10 per cent for two years or more. At the end of January there were 339 vacancies on offer at the Job Centre.
