Back to the drawing board for Landlord and Tenant Bill

by isleofman.com 10th February 2015
New legislation governing landlords and tenants’ rights has been branded ‘flawed’ and kicked out of the House of the Keys.
Members have voted 16 votes to six to support a Tynwald committee which recommended proposals in the Landlord and Tenant (Private Housing) Bill be redrafted from top to bottom.
Parts of it were described as 'unintelligible' by the committee and the majority of MHKs today (Tuesday) agreed.
Around 20 landlords – who had argued the bill was both confusing and unbalanced and weighted in favour of tenants – were in the public gallery.
After amendments, the bill will now be sent back to the Department of Social Care for review, while fresh drafting instructions are to be issued to the Attorney General’s Chambers to make the legislation more understandable.
