Perpetual care would spell grave news for ratepayers

by isleofman.com 9th February 2015
Douglas Council says it can't take on the perpetual care of graves in the borough, because it's proving too costly for ratepayers.
A scheme where gravestones were maintained by the council on behalf of residents in return for a one-off payment was stopped in 2001.
This week the local authority will consider a report which says future upkeep is likely to cost more than ?13,000 per grave, over a 40-year period.
The full council will be asked to turn down a bid to reinstate the scheme, when it meets on Wednesday.
