Steam Packet supports marine conservation-themed shows for schools

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting a show promoting marine conservation which will tour Island primary schools in March.

The Lempen Puppet Theatre Company is making a return visit to the Island, with travel assistance provided by the Steam Packet Company, to perform The Fisherman and The Pearl.

The show, made in partnership with The Marine Conservation Society, is the story of a fisherman’s love, and a precious gift that gives him knowledge of the creatures below the waves.

Liz Lempen, who performs the show, said: ‘We love coming to the Isle of Man. This will be our ninth tour since 1994 when we first visited. Our productions have always been appreciated by Manx people. Perhaps it's because they have such a strong story tradition themselves.

‘It's also wonderful to perform The Fisherman and The Pearl there as it covers issues of conservation of the marine environment which have obviously been carefully considered in managing the no dredging zones to preserve the scallops and the fishery.’

‘The visit has been made possible thanks to the support of The Ernest Cook Trust, The Marine Conservation Society and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, and I would like to thank them all.’

During the tour, which runs from 10th to 18th March, The Fisherman and The Pearl will be performed at the following primary schools: Manor Park, Foxdale, Sulby, Arbory, Scoill Vallajeelt, St John's and Cronk-y-Berry.

Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘We’re really pleased to be able to assist the Lempen Puppet Theatre Company with its latest visit to the Island. I understand the shows are always very popular with the children, and I hope this year’s show helps them appreciate the importance of looking after our marine environment, which is so vital to our Island community.’
