There was an excellent entry of 23 in last weekend’s Match Play U8 event.

So much so that play was divided into 6 groups for a r/robin. Four groups were of players with little or no competitive experience and some only 5/ 6years old. After the group matches the results were Gr.A  1st Ryan Colquitt r/up Jake Turner; Gr.B 1st Jessica Brodie r/up Liam Taverner; Gr. C - 1st Cameron Roome  r/up Lucas Harding; Gr.D 1st William Shooter r/up Callum Larkin. In the semi finals all players gave a very good account of themselves William Shooter bt Ryan Colquit 10-2, Cameron Roome bt Jessica Brodie 10-7. The final was a very good demonstration of these young players tennis skills with Cameron eventually beating William 10-6. In the other two groups we had more experienced players, still all under 8. Group A winner Ben Bosworth r/up Orry Farnworth; Group B winner Henry Telford r/up Charlie Brikc. In the semi finals Ben bt Charlie 10-7 and Henry bt Orry 10-8. The final was again a very close match with Henry beating Ben 10-8.

On Sunday six players U10 contested the green ball event again as a round robin competition. There was some excellent play from all six players including Gabby Sullivan playing in her first competition.

However the stronger players “came to the top” with Charlotte Clarke beating Jayden Go in the final match 4/2and taking 1st prize, Jayden was r/up and 3rd spot went to Harry McAleer. Medals were presented by Club President, Bryan Sharp who was very impressed with their playing standard which promises good things for the future of the club.

Reminder to all juniors that there will be no coaching between 7 and 15 February as it is half-term. Still there is nothing to stop a group of you going to the club and having a game, especially when our new courts dry out so quickly after rain. If under 13 you will have to have an adult in attendance with you.

Tickets for the annual Quiz Night will be available from any committee member by the weekend. How about some parents making up a team? – maximum per team is 6. Team entries to e-mail – albanytennispr@manx.net. The quiz team is headed by last year’s winners “Six is not enough”. There will be a raffle – prizes include ?25 Shoprite voucher, other vouchers, wine, chocolates, tennis balls, etc. If you wish to donate a raffle prize please contact Jan Gaskill.
