Pllayers from Laxey Football Club’s under-16 Miners team are celebrating winning the prestigious Challenge Cup final this weekend at the Bowl in a closely matched final with Union Mills u16 A team.
Over 100 people witnessed a competitive match between arguably the top 2 teams in Isle of Man Junior football with Laxey eventually coming out on top 4-3 in extra time.
Laxey went into an early lead with two goals from Jordan Cooper, but then Eoghain Sherrard scored to make it 2 .1 just before half time, Laxey then went 3 .1 up early in the second half via an own goal.
Both teams made a number of substitutions and Union Mills staged a great comeback to make it 3.3 just before full time following a second goal from Sherrard and a free kick from Jordan Crawley.
Extra time started with Union Mills pressing hard, but then in the second half of extra time with the dreaded penalties looming, Maleigh Freestone on as a substitute for Laxey fired home a great shot which proved to be the winning goal.
The match was an excellent advert for the standard of local junior football and many of the players on show will undoubtely go on to play senior football and possibly represent the Island in the future.
