Ramsey Golf Report for Round 6 of the Winter League

by isleofman.com 26th January 2015

It was certainly a bit warmer for the 6th out of 8 rounds in the Ramsey Winter League and with a top 8 qualification for the knockout stages looming the competition was certainly hot.

With just 4 points now separating the top 11 teams, all it takes is a good couple of wins in the final rounds to determine a place in the knockout. In fact with 5 teams tied for 6th place it couldn’t really get much closer, certainly squeaky-bum time. This week’s good conditions resulted in some great scoring. Sean Cunningham and the on-form Peter Collister looked to secure a win to get them a knockout place but the match against Ian Jones and Nigel Bolt was never going to be a walkover. Ian and Nigel just managed to keep ahead to the end by two shots which means both teams are on 12 points and still need a good win to take them into the next stage.  Also in the 12 point group were Stu Douglas and Barry Teare. They look good for a knockout place and defeated Robbie Moore and David Kinrade by 3 shots. The Simpsons enjoyed a great Sunday morning and their closely fought match against Tony Kennish and Nigel Boyde ended in a one shot victory and 5th place in the league. League leaders, Pro, Andrew Dyson and Captain Phil Hassall maintained their lead this week with a one shot win over Paul Allinson and Connal Hughes. The pressure is on though as Dave Littler and Kevin Berry had a barnstorming round ending up with 48 points and an 8 point margin of victory against Ray McElhinney and Frank Feeney, moving into 2nd place in the league on 15 points. Steve Waters and Ian Craine missed a golden opportunity to become league leaders after suffering a narrow one point defeat by the Neil McGlinchey team.

Top match of the day was Daniel Arneil and Nick Dutnall pitted against the Laxey duo, Michael McLorey and Robbie Lawson. Again, there was just one shot in the outcome and the Laxey boys were just victors on 44 points taking 2nd place on the day with 3rd place going to Dan and Nick and Dave Littler and Kevin Berry taking the premier day prize.

The next round will be on Sunday 8th February with nothing yet decided and all to play for.
