Colby topple Ayre in Cup

by isleofman.com 10th January 2015
It was a windy and action packed Preliminary Round of the Paddy Power FA Cup with a flurry of goals across Saturday’s nine games.
Division Two side Colby secured a top flight scalp with a 3-1 win over Ayre United.
Goals from Colby’s Adam Fretwell and Jamie Callister left the game level at 1-1 with just 10 minutes to play, but late strikes from Ashley Blake and Stephen Kelly helped the Division Two side grab a famous win.
Governors Athletic took a shock lead against 30-time winners Peel with a stunning Chris Booth free-kick to give the home side a perfect start in their first ever FA Cup tie.
Despite the setback, Premier League leaders Peel soon showed their class as Lee Gayle’s five goals and Will Morris’s first ever first team hat-trick helped the Westerners to a club record 18-1 victory.
At Ballacloan Stadium the tie between Ramsey and Ramsey Youth Centre began with a minute’s silence for former players Robert Campbell and Jamie Cowhig - who were both killed in road traffic collisions over the Christmas period.
The match saw Ramsey secure a 7-3 win over their closest neighbours despite Ramsey Youth Centre holding last year’s runners-up 3-3 at half time.
Union Mills made it two wins in a row against Gymns in an action packed game at Garey Mooar. Max Stokoe’s double put the visitors into a 2-0 lead before goals from Joey Morling, Stephen Halsall and a Jordan Crawley hat-trick saw Mills seal a 5-2 victory.
At Glen Road a Blane Slattery second half strike helped Corinthians grab a narrow 3-2 win in thrilling tie at Laxey.
Michael United knocked out Division Two high flyers Douglas Athletic 5-0 thanks to efforts from Matthew Brand, Anthony Corkhill, Stephen Quayle and an Andrew Williamson brace.
At the Bowl, St Mary’s ran out 4-0 winners over Rushen United with Mark Riley, Marc Wolfenden, Steven Whitley and Stephen Priestnal helping the home-side notch an impressive win.
A Joey Rothwell hat-trick and strikes from Stuart Morris and Kevin Druggan saw Marown seal a 5-0 victory over Douglas & District.
Finally, a Mike Stringer effort was enough for St John’s as they won 1-0 at second division Douglas Royal.
The draw for the Paddy Power FA Cup First Round - to be played on Saturday 31st January – was made on the Saturday Sport Classified programme:-

Union Mills vs. St Mary’s
