New Years Fun Day held at Douglas Lawn Tennis Club

by isleofman.com 5th January 2015

The recently re-formed Douglas Lawn Tennis Club (previously Kensington Road Tennis Club) held a highly enjoyable New Year ‘Fun Day’ for its members yesterday afternoon, Sunday 4th January.

3 teams of 6, captained by Stewart Swann, Karen Faragher, and Steph Joyce, competed in a series of tennis-related events:

tennis proper, short tennis, table tennis, and speed serving.

The winning team overall was Stewart’s team of himself, Paul Jarvis, Tania Thomas, Mark Bangero, Carol Crooks and Thomas Lindsay but for some the focus was strongly on the speed serving with keen competition to achieve the highest speed.  The individual highest was Stewart, recording a valid serve of 96 mph (and 3 invalid serves of 100), but the highest speed for a team, averaged over the 6 players, went to Karen’s team who averaged a best result of 77 mph each.

Members enjoyed the variety and it was good to see the recognised ‘big players’ at tennis being brought down a level when they tackled short tennis and table tennis.

Refreshments were available, and also much enjoyed at this cold time of year: mulled beverages, hot dogs, cakes and plenty of nibbles.

There is a real buzz developing at DLTC as the membership is growing healthily, and the club was recently awarded the running of two of the most prestigious events in the IoM tennis calendar by the IoMLTA: the Junior and Senior IoMLTA Championships.

2015 promises to be a key year in the development of the club with more events and more involvement in the Isle of Man League competitions.

Adult coaching courses for beginners and improvers are resuming this Tuesday, January 6th 6-7pm. For more information or to register please contact Karen on 472413 or email douglastennis@manx.net.
