For its final Centenary event of this term King William's College pupils took part yesterday in the "Football Remembers" national initiative to commemorate the Christmas Truce of 1914 with a football match.
As King William's College have students from more than 20 different nationalities, they were able to field a German team from among their pupils (with a little help from Hungary and Russia !) to recreate a German-British match, watched by the whole school.
The teams stood at opposite ends of the pitch and when the German team started singing "Stille Nacht" the British team answered with "Silent Night". The two teams met in the middle of the pitch for a symbolic handshake which signaled the start of the match.
It was a competitive game with some excellent goalkeeping by Richard Menzel, but the British team finally prevailed in the last quarter and when the final whistle blew the score was 2-0.
Thanks to Mr Crabtree and Mr Jeffers for organising the teams and to all the players who took part for helping to mark this historic event with a truly sporting occasion.
