A clear and sunny, if not totally dry underfoot, Sunday morning saw 30 teams do battle in the 3rd round of the Winter League.
With Andrew Dyson injured, Chris Hinchcliffe stepped in to partner Phil Hassall against Geoff Lawson and Tim Eyre. A close fought match ensued with the two H’s just winning by one point and Phil Hassall taking another 3rd place in the competition. Not all matches were that close and there were 7 point differences enjoyed by Ray Rowley and Bob Baggaley over Mark Corrin and Phil Scales and even the President, Robbie Radcliffe and Jeff Gough suffered the same fate from David Kinrade and Robbie Moore, who narrowly missed out on 3rd spot on count back. Barry Teare and Stu Douglas continued their partnership success with another 7 point landslide over Gordon Clarke and Tony Wood. A 44 point score was enough to give them 2nd place. There were some tight games out there with the Hughes brothers drawing on 38 with Neill Hartley and Kerry McKeating and on 40 points Sean Cunningham and Peter Collister drew with Tony Kennish and Nigel Boyde. Top match of the day was between winter golf specialist Kick McClory and Robbie Lawson against the in-form Simpson duo, John and David. The Simpsons destroyed the Laxey boys and with 46 points also took first place for the day.
The league table is now starting to take shape and week in week out consistency is the key. Andrew Dyson and Phil Hassall are joint top with Steve Waters and Ian Craine just ahead of Stu Douglas and Barry Teare but with only three points between the top ten teams it’s anyone’s guess who will stay the course. The next match will the 7th December, just after the Club Christmas party!
