Acid closes scallop bed

by isleofman.com 21st November 2014
A king scallop fishing ground showing high levels of a potentially dangerous marine chemical has been closed to fishing boats.

Bradda is now closed again after naturally-occurring domoic acid levels rose, and the area joins Peel in being off-limits because of the algae by-product.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says it will carry out regular testing in both areas to determine when levels fall and the beds can open again.

The news comes less than three weeks after the scallop season started on November 1.
