Albany Tennis Latest News

by isleofman.com 31st October 2014

Club Championships sponsored by Auxesia Ltd. – apologies to Jack Christian and Zac Walker (pictured). They played a very good final in the U12 mixed singles and I missed out the result. Jack won 4/1 4/2 but one spectator said to me “ It must be pleasing to see children of that age playing so well” which is nice to hear. Well done boys.

The Club AGM was fairly well attended. Chairman’s Stuart Colligon gave a comprehensive report on the very busy year the club and the committee had just finished it’s year of office was re-elected en bloc except for David Winnell who has stepped down from the time consuming role. However David Bufton agreed to taking his place and I’m sure the financial side of club matters will be well looked after. It was agreed that annual fees would not be increased and that members quoting a British Tennis membership number would receive a ?5 reduction. The more members the club has with BTM numbers,  improves the number of Wimbledon tickets allocated to the club. To increase use of the indoor court the fee has been reduced to ?10 per hour from 1 November. The W K Dale trophy was awarded to David Winnell, the retiring treasurer for his unstinting efforts during the past year both on and off court.

The new date for the postponed Albany Auxesia Junior Open is 15 – 22nd November. Events are Mini Tennis – U8, U9 and U10, also U12 and U18 singles plus U12 and U18 doubles. Forms are being e-mailed to all juniors and there are entry forms in the club house. This event is open to juniors from other clubs and we would welcome them as it would give different opposition to our players. Also a chance for visiting players to try the new courts. For this event we will be presenting trophies immediately at the end of a final, on court, instead of trying to have everyone back for a finals day presentation. This could mean that finals would be played the first weekend or during the week. We are endeavouring to have the tournament completed on Friday 21st or the morning of Saturday 22nd as that day at 4pm HE Lt Governor Adam Wood will be “officially” hitting the first ball. The committee hope everyone will co-operate where possible so that both events can be successful.

There are still some tickets available for the Night at the Races on 7 November – these are available from Kirsten Hall, Jan Gaskill or me.  There is also still room on the race sheets for races, owners, trainers and jockeys although any remaining ones can be sold on the night. Tickets for the raffle are now on sale in the clubhouse.
