by isleofman.com 22nd October 2014

The Association of Corporate Service Providers’ seminar on Tuesday November 18th will be ‘Limitations of Liability in Maritime Law – an Isle of Man Perspective’ with Peter Taylor of Simcocks Advocates.

The seminar will provide a background to the concept of ship owners limiting their liability, discuss the Limitation in Maritime Claims Convention 1976 and its application under Manx and international law, together with the advantages it offers to ship and yacht owners registered in the Isle of Man.

Mr Taylor has been involved in the shipping industry for more than 30 years, the last seven years as a lawyer and prior to that as a marine engineer, initially as an engineer officer in the Merchant Navy and as a surveyor for Lloyd’s Register and the Isle of Man Ship Register. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has been a Chartered Engineer since 1995. During his time in the industry he gained considerable experience in surveying merchant ships, commercial yachts and fishing vessels and in drafting international and merchant shipping legislation. He has also served as an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve. At Simcocks he advises on most shipping and ship-related matters and has a detailed knowledge of seafaring employment matters under the relevant Merchant Shipping Acts and can advise on all aspects of employment, contracts, incentives, workplace disputes, regulatory issues and proceedings.

Sponsored by Dougherty Quinn, session will be at the Upper Hall, Loch Promenade Church, Douglas, with registration at 12noon for a prompt 12.30pm start. Subject to the number of questions and contributions from the audience the seminar is expected to finish at around 1.30pm.
