The final Summer Competition is traditionally the Masters and Rabbits and a sunny day was all we could really ask for. A big turn-out saw some competitive golf with past, present and future Captains featuring in the top group. Ray Rowley had an excellent round with 38 points and will do well in the Winter League starting on the 26th October .The Arniel’s turned out and this time it was Father Bob and Daniel at the top with Jamie suffering a rare disqualification. Daniel posted 38 points after birdies on the 6th and 7th but no points on the 13th was a real set-back in what was an excellent start. He pulled a shot back with a birdie on the 14th but bogey’s on the 15th and the final hole meant not only 6th place but one shot behind the old man! After a tricky start with no points scored on the 2nd and 3rd Bob had some work to do to show that experience really counts in the family match. A birdie on the 4th, 7th and 13th put him right back into contention and looking at a 41 point round but a lapse on the 15th and crucially again on the 17th meant that 39 points was not enough.
After a reasonable season Paul Morris was in the hunt on the final day and after a steady start looked to take up the pace but successive dropped shots on the 13th through to the 16th dulled the edge somewhat but a 39 point finish and 3rd place on count-back over Bob Arniel, after Bob had dropped a shot on the 17th, was a satisfying mornings work for Paul.
In the afternoon it was a shoot out between Sean Cunningham and Stu Douglas. Right at the beginning of the season I said Stu was likely to win something this year and this was his last chance. He started off playing steady golf. Sean dropped a shot on the first and carded a 5 on the 3rd giving Stu the edge. Stu gained some daylight on Sean with birdies on the 4th and 6th, both good home bankers for later. Sean focused on the next few holes and also picked up a shot on the 6th with a nice birdie putt. Playing a steady round is his trademark and he continued to get in the groove and keep the ball on the fairway as the round progressed. Stu was under pressure and dropped shots on the 12th, 13th and 15th but he had played well in the early holes and just needed to keep calm on the way in. Only a birdie on the 18th from Sean could scupper Stu’s day. As the final hole unfolded Sean put his 18th tee shot on the front edge of the green with the pin cut back left. A mammoth putt required from Sean for a two but with it surely the Masters crown. A smooth roll as the ball glided across the 18th and Sean focused in hope as the ball approached the cup. His head bowed as the ball came to a stop inches from the hole and victory disappeared. Stu managed a classic par in finish on the final three holes and was justifiably the Ramsey Master for 2014.”
