The two Isle of Man riders competing for Great Britain in the UCI Road World Championships elite men's road race acquitted themselves well in what was a gruelling contest.
Onchan resident Ben Swift came twelfth, and Peter Kennaugh was 82nd - they were the only two British riders to finish the race in Spain.
The rest of the seven-man Great Britain squad dropping away one by one in an attritional race in difficult conditions.
Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland took the world title ahead of Simon Gerrans of Australia and Alejandro Valverde of Spain.
Great Britain team director Dave Brailsford told BBC Sport afterwards, "I thought Ben rode the perfect race really.
"He had to gamble. He had to be patient and it was a question for him whether it was going to come back at the end.
"Pete Kennaugh did his job really, really well and showed what great form he'd come out of the Vuelta with."
