The only Manxman to have won the Victoria Cross for gallantry and leadership in World War Two has had a bridge in Castletown named after him.
Major Robert Cain was a member of the 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, in command of a rifle company that held out for several days under heavy fire to secure the bridge at the Battle of Arnhem. His VC citation said of him: 'His coolness and courage under incessant fire could not be surpassed.'
His daughter, Frances Clarkson carried out the ceremony that saw the footbridge over Castletown harbour become the Cain Bridge.
She said: 'My father was a very patriotic Manxman and would have been incredibly proud to have this bridge named after him.’
