There will be a special farewell to the horse tram service on Douglas promenade which is to change after almost a century and a half of service.

The last tram will leave from the Strathallan terminus at 5.20pm on Sunday September 14 and the 2015 summer season service will then be suspended to allow for major works on the prom. When they return in 2016 - in their 140th year - the horse trams will run on a single track on the seaward side of the road.

Douglas Councillor Stephen Pitts said: 'The Douglas horse tram service has been a familiar and much- loved sight for many years and has operated for well over a century with scarcely an interruption.'This special weekend promises to be a memorable occasion, an opportunity to share in an historic moment in the tramway's history.'

There will be an open day at the Strathallan stables on September 14 from 2pm to 5pm, with attractions for children. Throughout the weekend a variety of trams, including the double decker, will be operating with free travel for under 16s all weekend.
