Pictured are some of the members of the African Community with nursery nurse Wendy Cowin from Rebecca House and Margaret Simpson, Chief Executive of Hospice. The group had run a stall with the One World Centre on Tynwald Day and raised the amount of ?304.30. It was decided to present the funds raised to the local children’s hospice.
The One World Centre wanted to raise awareness of the different cultures represented on the Isle of Man therefore invited the African Community on the island to participate at the Tynwald Day as part of the Global Village.
The Africans had two stalls displaying arts, crafts, African prints, costumes and food from the following countries represented:- Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe. It was agreed that items displayed would be sold and proceeds raised would be donated to a local charity.
Two members of the African Group had prior encounters with representatives from Rebecca House:- one witnessed Mary Doyle speaking about Rebecca House at the Barclays Bank Women Breakfast meeting earlier in the year, and the other had been approached to get involved in an activity book raising funds for the local charity.
Rebecca House was unanimously selected as the Charity for donation of the proceeds raised on Tynwald Day.
Margaret thanked the group for their kind donation.
