Manx Telecom offers fix to bank phone scam

by isleofman.com 22nd August 2014
Manx Telecom has closed a loophole on its fixed line network, which has been exploited by telephone bank scammers.

Fraudsters have persuaded a number of Island residents to call their bank from a land line - claiming they've been the victim of a bank fraud.

But the scammers have intercepted the return calls, posing as bank officials and duping the customer into transferring large sums of money to them, from their accounts.

Until now the ruse has worked because the line is held open by the fraudsters, who never put the phone down at their end.

Manx Telecom says it has fixed the problem, and since Thursday morning, calls are cleared within two seconds, instead of almost two minutes as before.

MT's chief technology officer Kevin Paige says it has been a complex fix:Clip 1
