The Wild West is coming to the Gaiety Theatre – thanks to the Manx Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Isle of Man Bank.
The society is staging the smash hit musical Calamity Jane in October, with support of the event from Isle of Man Bank.
Starring Sarah Elder in the title role, the musical is set in the Wild West and based on the blockbuster hit film of the same name, which starred Doris Day and Howard Keel. The film spawned a number one hit with Secret Love and the musical includes other classic songs including Black Hills of Dakota, Windy City and Careless with the Truth.
Show director and society chairman Val Cowley said: ‘We’re looking forward to putting on a great show from the heyday of the Hollywood musicals.
‘We are very grateful for the generous support from Isle of Man Bank, which makes shows like this possible.’
Calamity Jane is a love story with a difference as Jane tries to impress Wild Bill Hickock, played by Matt Quinn, by exaggerating tales of her escapades as she drives a stagecoach.
Jane also tries to help her friend Henry Miller, played by Frank Smyth, who is proprietor of the Golden Garter.
Frank and his niece Susan, played by Dandi Dancox, have had trouble pleasing audiences with their cabaret and are looking for an act that will prove popular, so Jane promises to bring back from Chicago the famous Adelaide Adams, played by Lisa Dancox.
Val Cowley has won numerous awards from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association. Musical director is John Elliot.
John Lindon, Head of Community Investment at Isle of Man Bank, said: ‘We’re delighted to be supporting this show.
‘Isle of Man Bank has always been keen to help the Island’s thriving theatre scene and we are sure Calamity Jane will prove a big hit with the audience.’
The show runs from October 14-18, with a matinee on October 18. Tickets start from ?18, with concessions available. Contact the box office on 600555 or visit the website cvvg.gov.im
