New test will highlight 'unique' aspects of Island driving

by isleofman.com 21st August 2014
Learner drivers in the Island will have to pass a new theory test from next month - uniquely based around Manx motoring.
The computer-based test has been designed to reflect the peculiarities of driving on island roads.
It is the result of collaboration by authorities here with their counterparts in Jersey and Guernsey - where tailor-made versions of the test are also being introduced.
The test will feature multiple choice questions and answers and a hazard perception section, as before, which candidates must pass before they take their practical driving test.
According to the Department of Infrastructure the new tests will focus more on specific aspects of driving on an island and this island in particular - although it hasn't said what they are.
The test will also feature environmental issues, vehicle knowledge and put more emphasis on driving considerately.
DoI minister Phil Gawne says the partnership work with colleagues in the Channel Islands has seen costs and expertise shared.
Candidates taking the theory tests after September 4 will need to obtain an updated training package from the Vehicle Test Centre at Tromode or Isle of Man College.
