Lloyd Mayor, a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York and an Island of Culture youth ambassador, is to hold a contemporary dance workshop at his old school, Ballakermeen High School, on Saturday, August 30th.
The former Young Dancer of Mann, who will be celebrating his 21st birthday in September, is now enjoying a stellar career in the US, receiving rave reviews for his inspired interpretation of contemporary dance works, which earlier this year in New York saw him receive the Clive Barnes 2013 dance award.
In addition to holding the workshop in the school’s dance studio, which he opened on November 29th 2013, Lloyd will be giving a solo performance based on dance classes he has given to students of the Ballet Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, followed by a talk tracing his life and work in dance.
Island of Culture events director Michael Lees said: ‘This is a real coup for Island of Culture and indeed for the Isle of Man. We’re delighted that Lloyd was able to find time in his packed international schedule to return to the Island and share with us his passion for dance. We’re also very grateful to Ballakermeen High School’s head teacher Adrienne Burnett for her support and accommodating what promises to be a unique event in Island of Culture’s calendar.’
Open to dancers aged 10 and over the workshop is limited to 20 places and offered as a ticket-only event priced ?10 per person, payable in advance.
There is no charge for the solo performance and talk to be held in the school’s Studio Theatre from 2 to 4pm. Limited capacity, however, requires that places be booked in advance via the Villa Marina box office, www.villagaeity.com
