Campaigner attracts support to Summerland commemoration

by isleofman.com 5th August 2014

The organiser of an event to commemorate the Summerland fire disaster says she's delighted with support for her go-it-alone campaign.
Around 60 people attended a short ceremony opposite the Summerland site this weekend (Sat 2 August) to mark the deaths of 50 people in the tragedy 41 years ago.
Among them, a couple from Warrington who travelled to the Island to remember their friends Allen Barker and Sean Kelly, who perished in the blaze.
The event was organised by Glen Vine resident Tina Brennan who witnessed the blaze. Last year she mounted a petition calling on the Manx government to stop the site being sold for development.
Since then Tina has attracted growing support on and off-Island for an annual commemoration to mark the loss of life.
A one minute's silence was held on Douglas Promenade on Saturday night at the time the fire broke out, before 50 white balloons were released.
More than ?850 was raised for children's burns charities at a Summerland memorial gig featuring local artists held afterwards.
