Manx Cancer Help and the Mifumi School project in Uganda are both to benefit following the Standard Bank charity football tournament on 12th July, which raised ?2,000.
Despite heavy rain, which prompted organisers to cancel the family fun element of the day, the football carried on and was enjoyed by everyone who played. The Standard Bank SuperCup was won by Nationwide, who topped the 15 teams, while the runners-up Shield was taken by Conister Bank.
The tournament was organised by Standard Bank’s Corporate & Business Banking team in the Isle of Man.
Ian Hamilton, Head of Standard Bank’s CBB team said it was disappointing that the family entertainment had to be cancelled, but charity was still the winner: ‘Despite some very soggy football players we had an excellent turnout of staff and teams, and with a top-up donation from Standard Bank we raised ?2,000, which will be split between the two charities.
'Thank you to all those who played on, despite the weather, and a special thanks to the referees who volunteered their time to stand in the rain and oversee the matches, as well as to the Union Mills Football Club for hosting us.’
Manx Cancer Help is an Isle of Man cancer charity (no. 1024). Established in 1983, it provides specialist psychological and emotional support to anyone whose life has been affected by a cancer diagnosis. Based at the Lisa Lowe Centre, Manx Cancer Help is completely self-funded, achieved through events, donations and collaborations with local businesses and individuals.
Manx Cancer Help Fundraising events co-ordinator, Ally Martin, was delighted with the cheque presentation: ‘Thank you to Standard Bank for organising it and to everyone who took part and braved the Isle of Man weather. Events like this are great fun to be involved in, but provide us with some serious help through the funds they raise.’
Standard Bank is also celebrating its African heritage by sponsoring the Mifumi Schools project, a charity that enables over 700 boys and girls to receive an education in a remote area of Uganda.
The football event was held at Union Mills Football Club on Saturday July 12th.
