An information day is being held on Friday 15 August at Peel Cathedral in a bid to raise awareness of the services available for the older members of the community and their carers.
Organised by the Older Peoples Community Social Work Team from the Department of Health and Social Care, the exhibition will feature around 30 organisations from health and social care providers along with various voluntary and private care agencies.
Building on the success of previous information days, the event seeks to bring together support, expertise and advice all under one roof in an informal setting.
Member for Adult Services, David Quirk MHK, said: “The main aim of the day is to raise awareness within the community about what services are available for older people and for carers. There is a great deal of support out there, but sometimes we find that people are unaware of how to access it.
“By highlighting the support available we can help empower more of our older people to make choices that suit their individual needs and assist them in leading fulfilling and independent lives.
“I would very much encourage anyone who feels they may benefit to come along and find out more.”
The information day reflects the spirit of the Government’s philosophy of working in partnership with the private and third sectors, which ultimately will help in delivering enhanced levels of service to older people on the Island.
The day will see representatives from a broad cross section of care providers and associated organisations including Men in Sheds, the Stroke Association, the Diabetes Centre, the Older Persons Mental Health Team and many more.
The services available can involve help in the home with tasks such as cleaning or shopping; disability equipment and adaptations; day centres; residential/nursing homes; support for carers; and financial support. It is often minor assistance that makes a big difference in people’s lives.
In addition the event will include both free blood pressure testing and diabetes testing throughout the day. There will also be a raffle with all proceeds being donated to a local charity.
As well as promoting the diverse range of services that are available, the day hopes to serve as a means for the Department to collect feedback on current service provision and any potential areas for development.
The event will take place between 10.30am and 3.30pm at Peel Cathedral. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free. For more information contact Adult Services on 686182.
