Ramsey Golf Club welcome visitors from Sussex

by isleofman.com 1st August 2014

On a sunny but blustery Wednesday afternoon Ramsey Captains played a 4BBB match-play against very welcome visitors from Sussex. They were a group of Past Captains visiting the Isle of Man in conjunction with Isle of Man Golf Tours (www.isleofmangolftours.com)

The friendly challenge turned out to be quite a close game with two of the four matches halved. With Robbie Radcliffe and Paul Morris down at the turn they did very well to get points on the board and a draw against the leading Sussex team. Steve Westcott and Bryan Waddington had a right old tussle and also earned a good draw. Experience did provide the edge and John Mead and Alan Gelling won 2 points to one to provide a slight lead with just one group left out on the course. Captain Sean Cunningham and Richard Power (Ramsey's youth team players!) managed to keep their noses ahead but it was not until the 17th did the win over Kevin Heanen and David Noble materialise. Kevin's skill with the Taylor Made 7 iron throughout the match was a constant thorn in the Ramsey side, guaranteed to chip close for a short putt whenever required. Afterwards, following a great meal, Dennis Baker and the rest of the Sussex team, no doubt mystified by the whole Ramsey Town Cup thing,  played a leading part in the Ramsey Town Cup draw by providing an independent input for Competition Secretary, Phil Hassall. The Team played both Peel and Castletown courses, enjoying the contrasting scenery and golfing challenges offered by the Isle of Man as an excellent golfing destination.

Please note that next week is Ramsey Golf week with the Ramsey Town Cup being played on Monday. This is a 36 hole premier Island golfing event featuring leading players from around the Island. I will send a report in on Tuesday.
