Sunset Boulevard premier set for the Gaiety

by isleofman.com 1st August 2014

The curtain is about to rise on the stunning musical Sunset Boulevard, which begins a 12-night run at the Gaiety Theatre on August 4th.

SMP Partners is lending its support to the Taylorian production by becoming a Gold Sponsor. The company has previously supported major shows at the Gaiety including last summer’s CATS, Tommy, the Wizard of Oz, Miss Saigon, Evita and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

More than 30 cast members have been in rehearsals for two months in preparation for the Isle of Man premiere of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard. In fact, this will be the British Isle’s amateur premiere of the show after Lord Lloyd-Webber’s company approached Taylorian and offered them the chance to be the first to stage it in the British Isles.

Based on the 1950 Billy Wilder movie, it focuses on a young scriptwriter, Joe Gillis, whose life changes as he crashes into the fantasy world of faded screen goddess Norma Desmond. Alongside a gripping story, it features musical highlights including As If We Never Said Goodbye, With One Look and The Perfect Year, plus stylish 1950s costumes and scenic designs. It promises to be a show to remember.

Co-founder of Taylorian Productions Matt James said: ‘Sunset has what every great musical needs; a fantastic story combined with fabulous music and thrilling themes.

‘Not only are the lyrics poignant, witty and genuinely moving, but the show contains hit songs previously recorded by many international artistes, including Barbara Streisand, Elaine Paige and Dina Carroll.

‘Without the likes of SMP, however, it simply wouldn’t happen and we are extremely grateful for their ongoing support. Hopefully their staff will enjoy the occasion.’

Mark Denton, Managing Director of SMP Partners, said: ‘We have been proud to be involved so many outstanding productions over the years, which have brought so much enjoyment to so many.

‘This will be the first time Sunset Boulevard has been performed in the Isle of Man, so it is a great opportunity for Manx audiences to experience what is considered by Lloyd-Webber himself as probably his greatest score.

‘Having been fortunate enough to have seen many Taylorian productions over the years, I know the cast and crew will bring their usual professional, talent and commitment to ensure every evening is a night to remember.’

SMP Partners will be hosting a special evening at one of the performances, where proceeds of recent events will be donated by charity of the year Manx Cancer Help and there will be an opportunity for the charity to further boost funds with a bucket collection.

Sunset Boulevard runs nightly at the Gaiety Theatre from August 4th to the 16th at 7.30pm. (No show August 10th). Tickets are available sale from the Welcome Centre, villagaiety.com or the box office 600555/694500.
