Athletes

It was a mixed day in terms of fortune for Team Isle of Man yesterday with some fantastic performances in the Swimming mixed with disappointment for Andy Nash in the Triathlon and Bernice McGreal in the Lawn Bowls.

Alex Bregazzi won his heat in the 400m Freestyle as the first Manx Swimmer in the pool. His time unfortunately wasn’t fast enough to get him into the semi final but he swam close to his personal best. Laura Kinley and Niamh Robinson swam excellently in the 50m Breaststroke heats both qualifying for the semi final, Charlotte Atkinson qualified third in her heat in the 100m Freestyle as did Grant Halsall in the 100m Backstroke. Guy Davies smashed the IOM National record in the 200m Breaststroke heats.

In the evening semi finals at the Tolcross International Pool Laura Kinley and Niamh Robinson swam excellently to finish 6th and 7th in their 50m Breaststroke semi. Charlotte Atkinson was a little disappointed with her time in her semi but finished 6th in the 100m Freestyle and Grant Halsall swam strongly in the 100m Backstroke.

There was huge disappointment for Andy Nash in the Triathlon where when handily placed in the cycle discipline in 29th he had a mechanical issue with the handlebars on his bike which caused him to slow up and be lapped by the front runners which meant he was asked to stop by the race officials. This was hugely annoying for Andy as just another short push would have seen him into his final lap on the bike and then into his strongest discipline of the run.

Bernice McGreal our Lawn Bowler lost her two matches yesterday one of which was against the bronze medallist from Delhi Kelsey Cottrell at Kelvingrove in West Glasgow.

Today sees the swimmers in action again including the men’s relay. Shooting starts at Barry Buddon with James Bradley and David Clague in the Skeet Qualifier. Bernice McGreal has two more matches in the Lawn Bowls.

Event Updates

Pete Kennaugh will not now contest the Individual Pursuit today after deciding to concentrate on the Points and Scratch races at the weekend.

Krystian Borucki has drawn Nigerian boxer Efetober Apochi in the 91kg category. As there are only thirteen boxers contesting this weight he does not start until Sunday afternoon and two wins would see him into the semis and a guaranteed bronze medal.

Keith Gerrard will be concentrating on the 10,000 metres on the Athletics track after considering but deciding not to run the 5,000 as well

Weather

The weather was sunny and very hot yesterday and after a cool start this morning is set to be very hot again.

Snippets

Alex Hedges, Laura Wasley and doctor Frank Vaughan went for lunch with the Queen yesterday with athletes from other nations at the dining hall in the village.
