Macmillan Cancer Support to Host 6th Annual Charity Golf Competition

by isleofman.com 17th July 2014

As part of its continued fundraising efforts to cover the services it provides to the people of the Isle of Man, Macmillan Cancer Support will host its 6th Annual Charity Golf Competition on Friday, 5 September 2014.

The competition which will take place at Peel Golf Club invites both individuals and teams of up to 4 to take part in the annual event being held to raise money for the local cancer support charity.

Statistics show that one in three people will get cancer and each year there are around 450 confirmed cases of cancer on the Isle of Man alone. Macmillan Cancer Support desires the ability to offer help to every one of them wanting their support. As treatments improve, a greater number of people are living with cancer in their daily lives which means that they need more than medical help; they need practical, emotional and financial support; something that can be provided by Macmillan Cancer Support.

Macmillan has funded and continues to support four clinical nurse specialists based at Nobles hospital who work with a range of people being treated for cancer, a lead Cancer GP on-island, a Histopathologist to help reduce waiting times for test results and diagnosis, and a consultant in Medical Oncology enabling more people to have the majority of their treatment on-island. They also provide a Macmillan Information Centre at Nobles hospital, which is open to anyone with concerns about cancer, providing support and information on other local services and support groups as well as providing assistance with financial and practical matters.

Event organiser and local Volunteer Fundraiser, Pat Cook said: “We are indebted to the many local companies who have supported the Macmillan Golf Competition since its inception and without whose aid the days would not have been a success.

“We are especially fortunate this year as local company, Abacus Trust Company Limited, has very kindly agreed to provide a Hole-in-One Prize Package for the competition, offering prizes on all four of the course’s Par 3 holes. The prizes include: ?5,000 cash; a 3-night holiday for 2 people at a 5* hotel in Portugal including flights, half board accommodation, car hire and golf; a 2-night break for 4 people at a hotel in the Forest of Arden and a set of Calloway RAZR X Clubs – so all players need to do is get a hole in one!”

The competition will be a 2 from 4 Stableford Am-Am format and will commence with essential sustenance, consisting of bacon baps for all players at 8.30am, before a shotgun start at 9.15am. Bangers and Mash will be served after the competition followed by a prize presentation and a raffle to conclude the day’s events.

Tickets are ?35.00 for visitors and ?25.00 for members, with ?13 from each ticket price going to Macmillan Cancer Support. If you would like to enter yourself or a team into the competition, please contact Peel Golf Club Secretary, Guy Smith on 842227 or email peelgc@manx.net.
