In positively sultry weather Ramsey Captain, Sean Cunningham, put on a fabulous weekend of competition and entertainment at the Club. Saturday saw a mixed AM AM with a squad of Irish visitors brought over by Sean to add some spice and see what a beautiful course there is at Ramsey. With Stableford scoring 90 points was a minimum Dave Ball’s team made the mark on 90. Nigel Boyde’s team played well and he followed up last week’s ace on the 18th with a birdie 2 this week to post a 92. Vinny Lyall, straight off the plane from Spain got stuck in with his team of stalwarts and joined Nigel on 92. An Irish flavour had to influence the prizes and the Sherrard team just edged ahead with a 93 after a birdie 4 at the Wall from Phil Sherrard. David Platt added another birdie on the 8th securing a commendable 3rd place. Bob Baggaley, with Steve Taylor, Ian Craine and Paul Routledge shot a 93 to take 2nd place on count back with some steady golf from Bob. A birdie on the 3rd from Paul was certainly celebrated later! The team of Joy Morris, Stella Jelski, Jill and Richard Power produced the goods. Joy birdied the 6th and 12th whilst the rest of the team were steady as a rock with Stella’s excellent putt from just off the green on the 1st giving the team a 7 pointer. Great Stuff and first prize followed by an Irish themed night with music from Brendan O’Laughlin into the early hours. Sore heads for some next day.
The Ladies on Sunday showed no ill effects from the night before and Pauline Merrill shot a fine 36. Ruth Murdoch took the longest drive on the 7th with a 190 yard boomer but first prize went to Karen McGurgan with a superb 38 points. The best Junior was Jamie Garrett with 36 points.
The men turned out in numbers and enjoyed Sean’s refreshments on the 7th. Despite some hangovers the early starters played some unbelievable stuff. Bob Baggaley after not much sleep birdied the 4th and 5th and then followed it up with a fine 2 on the 17th and walked in for a well deserved sleep on 44 points. Dave Boswell’s 271 yard drive on the 7th got him the longest drive of the day. The afternoon crew certainly had something to aim for; Peter Collister after a late night sprang into action over the early holes, but tiredness crept in towards the end with double bogey’s on the 15th and 17th. Steady golf otherwise and 4th place. Ramsey Ball continues to show his potential and his 41 points included a birdie on the 4th and another on the 7th and was a worthy 3rd overall. Richard Power, after a fine round the previous day had Bob Baggaley in his sights and felt confident after paring the opening 4 holes. Concentration slipped on the 6th after putting his tee shot in the water and dropping 2 shots. The 7th proved tricky as well with another poor drive and another 2 dropped shots, despair! A par on the 8th and an excellent long put on the 9th for a 2 brought him back into contention. The back 9 was now vital but Richard proved to be too erratic with a double bogey on the 12th and even a birdie on the long 14th just did not do enough and dropped shots on the closing holes gave Bob Baggaley the main prize just ahead of Richard. Great weekend for Sean, an excellent Club Captain.
